The history of hostelry in the building which now houses the U Salzmannů restaurant and pension began back in the 17th century. What was originally a coaching inn was bought in the 19th century by the former carter Martin Salzmann (yes, the same man who was behind the establishment of the famous Prague restaurant U Pinkasů, when he invited his friend, the Prague tailor Pinkas, to try a barrel of beer from the new Plzeň Municipal Brewery. The tailor liked it so much that he hung up his needle and thread and opened a pub) and soon gained the esteem and respect of the people of Plzeň as well as “out-of-towners”. The hostelry was closed down for a long time under Communism, when there was no interest in doing up the dilapidated building. Lucky common sense won the day after 1989 and after comprehensive reconstruction work the business was reopened ten years ago. The tastefully refurbished building and interior evoke the time of the early last century, when the restaurant was a popular meeting place for the townspeople of Plzeň and their guests.
And it is no different today – our guests have included many important figures from Czech and international cultural and political life, including both our presidents (although it is true that Václav Klaus was not yet in office at that time…) and the American ambassadors Craig R. Stapleton and W. J. Cabbanis.
What we primarily have to offer is the very highest quality homemade Bohemian cuisine. Our beef with cream sauce is renowned, and the same goes for our roast knee of pork or our goulash, our homemade apple strudel, or our many other specialties. Of course, you can also try lots of ready-made meals or light vegetable or pasta dishes. It goes without saying that we have a lavish selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, including a wide choice of Moravian wines. And, of course, wonderfully nurtured Plzeňský Prazdroj. Our restaurant is often the venue for major private and corporate events - weddings, private viewings, book christenings, and feasts. We can organise these events for up to 150 people with a feast layout, when the whole of the restaurant is available.
You can also use our wonderfully equipped, comfy lounge, which has its own facilities and has a convenient entrance through the back door, which leads to our own car park. We can prepare events that are literally “ready to walk into”, including floral decorations or music, all arranged exactly to suit your requirements. And of course we can also provide you with ideal premises for smaller social meetings or parties at a lavishly sumptuous table.
Of course, the most important thing with all of this is what is on your guests’ plates, and we are able to cater to almost everything you could desire as regards Bohemian and international cuisine – from Czech classics through fresh fish, venison specialties, roast or smoked sucking-pigs, ducks, turkeys, hot smoked ham on the bone, to a variety of Mexican or Italian specialties…
You just say what you like and we’ll prepare it for you! We would be happy to prepare a specific menu for your event – perhaps just so you can compare it with the competition.
We look forward to your visit!
